College Credit Opportunities

There are two methods by which Mohonasen students can earn college credit for courses taken right at our high school.

Advanced Placement

Accelerated students or high-achieving students may earn college credit from AP courses. These courses are extremely challenging and will help prepare students for the rigorous demands of four-year colleges. In order to qualify for college credit, students must score a 3 or better on the final AP exam – although higher scores may be required by some colleges. These are courses that typically follow a nationally standardized curriculum and culminate in an Advanced Placement exam (AP), for which a fee is charged. AP courses offered at Mohonasen are:

AP Biology
AP Calculus
AP English: Literature
AP Music Theory*
AP US History
AP World History

* Second year students in Music Theory have the opportunity to take the AP exam.

Agreements with Specific Colleges

Schenectady County Community College (SCCC

Mohonasen High School also has agreements with several colleges that will grant credit hours for specific courses we offer since our course is essentially equivalent to theirs. Courses are taught at Mohonasen by the high school faculty and vary from year to year. Students successfully completing the Mohonasen course and paying tuition will have a number of college credit hours to add to their resumé. Many times other colleges will accept these credits. For more details, see your school counselor and the course descriptions for each course. Mohonasen has an agreement with Schenectady County Community College (SCCC) at no cost to the student for:

Important! Colleges vary widely on the types of credit they grant and the grade or score required for such credit. For example, some accept a score of 3 on an AP exam, while others require a 4 or 5. For more information, seek details from the college you wish to attend.

Siena College

Mohonasen students can earn college credit for Computer Science through Siena College for a fee.

Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) Course

Mohonasen students can take an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate program and receive credit through Hudson Valley Community College for a fee. There are two classes in this program: Emergency Medical Technician and Anatomy/Physiology.

1+1 Options

Some motivated students will have an opportunity to take College in the High School courses to the extent that they can earn an associate’s degree from SCCC one year after graduating from Mohonasen High School. See your school counselor for details. (See page 7 for more information.)

Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Courses

These are pre-engineering courses that follow the curriculum of RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) classes. Students must earn a minimum grade in both the course and on the RIT exam to qualify for credit. Students may then decide whether or not they will pay for the credits. The approximate cost is $200 per course. As always, students should check with potential colleges to make sure that the credits will transfer.
