Since the start of last school year, student use of personal electronic devices has been strictly limited during the school day in all grade levels and buildings. This policy is applied consistently by staff and administration and aligns with statewide expectations set by New York State. These guidelines will remain in place for the 2025-26 school year as we continue working on creating a focused and engaging learning environment.
Limiting cell phone use during the school day helps students stay focused, reduces distractions in the classroom, and encourages face-to-face interaction and collaboration. Studies show that removing phones can improve academic performance, reduce anxiety and cyberbullying, and create a more positive learning environment.
High School and Draper:
- Cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, headphones, personal tablets (e.g., iPads), and similar electronic devices are not permitted to be used during school hours.
- These devices must be powered off or in silent mode with notifications disabled and stored out of sight in a secure location such as a locker, backpack, handbag, or teacher-managed storage area.
- Students are not permitted to carry these devices on their person during instructional time or in any educational setting, including hallways, restrooms, and cafeterias.
- Medical Needs: We understand that some students might need their devices for medical reasons. We’ll handle these situations individually, so please let us know if your child requires an exception.
Bradt and Pinewood:
In alignment with New York State’s new “bell-to-bell” cell phone restriction, recently signed into law by the Governor, students are not permitted to use cell phones during the school day. We strongly discourage students from bringing cellphones to school at all.
If a student does bring a phone, it must remain powered off and securely stored in their backpack from the moment they arrive until the end of the school day—including all instructional time, lunch, recess, and transitions. Bradt and Pinewood students are also prohibited from using cell phones on the school bus.
If a student is found using a cell phone during the school day or on the bus, the student will be required to turn their phone into administration and the phone will be secured in the main office. A parent or guardian will be contacted and will need to pick up the phone in person. Repeat offenses will lead to disciplinary action as outlined in the Code of Conduct.
