Therapy dogs bring comfort and connection to Mohonasen

At Mohonasen, therapy dogs have become a comforting and familiar presence for students and staff alike. With more than 10 certified therapy dogs visiting regularly across all grade levels, the district has embraced these furry companions as part of its commitment to student wellness and mental health support.

The dogs, accompanied by trained handlers, visit classrooms, hallways and common areas to offer companionship. Students are encouraged to pet, sit with, or read to the dogs—activities shown to reduce anxiety and improve emotional regulation. Staff members also benefit, often taking a moment to connect with the dogs during a busy day.

To help everyone get to know these special animals, the district will showcase a new therapy dog each week on the website and social media. Each post will feature one of the dogs, sharing their name, favorite activities, and where you might see them around the district.

Finley

Meet Finley, the Draper Animal Club mascot (he’s even met Steve Caporizzo!). Finley is a six-year-old Doodle who supports students and staff at Draper Middle School. His owner, Brittney Laudenschlager, is a school psychologist at Draper who works closely with students throughout the day, using Finley’s friendly presence to help create a safe, welcoming environment for all. Below is a Q&A with Mrs. Laudenschlager.

Q: What’s the most heartwarming moment you’ve experienced with Finley?
A: Seeing Finley interact with students at Animal Club. He brings so much happiness to the students! Finley also has a habit of putting his paws on students, which always makes them smile.

Q: Has your dog ever surprised you with their ability to comfort someone?
A: All the time! He has licked many tears and offered a paw to those in need. I’ve seen many students de-escalate because Finley is just so goofy.

Q: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from your therapy dog?
A: Having A LOT of patience as he has learned and grown! Additionally, to enjoy each moment. Dogs are only with us for such a short amount of time. I feel so grateful knowing that Finley gets to enjoy his “job!”

Q: How did you know your dog would be a good fit for therapy work?
A: Finley was just a puppy when my father passed away. He helped me so much through grief that I knew he would be a great therapy dog!

Q: Does your dog prefer belly rubs or ear scratches?
A: Finley isn’t picky…he will take either! The only thing that beats belly rubs or ear scratches is TREATS!
