Draper students, under the guidance of social studies teacher Mark DiCocco, planted American flags outside the front entrance of the school. Each flag symbolizes support earned through their recent fundraiser for the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). Thanks to the generosity of the Rotterdam community, the school raised nearly $1,250, enough to earn and display 120 flags in a tribute known as the Field of Flags.
This civic activity allows students not only to honor local veterans but also to help raise funds for those who have served our country. The display serves as a visual reminder of the sacrifices made by America’s heroes and the importance of supporting them after their service has ended. The activity is paired with a classroom lesson about Veterans Day.
The DAV, founded in 1920 by World War I veterans, is dedicated to empowering disabled veterans and their families. Through resources and essential services, the organization ensures that injured and ill veterans continue to receive the care, recognition and opportunities they deserve.
