Continuing Education – Fall 2018

General Information

The Fall 2018 Continuing Education & Swim Program guide has been mailed to residents. You can download a copy (pdf) or view a text version of class listings below.

Please read before registering for any class.

Unless you are notified otherwise, you may assume you are in the course for which you registered.

No school credit is given for any course.

Whenever a particular school is closed during the day, whether for planned vacations, inclement weather or for other emergency reasons, classes scheduled for that school will not meet that night. All cancelled classes will be made up.

Parking is prohibited in fire lanes. Please respect parking regulations and handicapped parking spaces.

We are always looking for new courses and teachers. We would like to hear from you if you feel you are qualified to teach a course or have suggestions or ideas for new courses. DO NOT send cash! A separate check must be issued for each course. Please indicate course title on each check. All registration for classes must be mailed to the above address. Registration for classes cannot be made by telephone.

If you register after classes begin, you will be assessed a late charge of $5. Refunds will be issued automatically for all classes cancelled due to insufficient enrollment.

If you decide to withdraw from a class after registration closes, but before a class begins, you will receive a refund less a $5 service charge. No refunds will be given for one- or two-night courses after registration closes, unless the course is cancelled. You will not receive a refund after the second class of any course.

Your continuing education program is a self-sustaining program with all expenses paid out of registration fees. No refunds, therefore may be given after classes have started.

Watch a MUD texture demo at 7:30pm. Ask questions about the classes that still have openings and registration is possible at Open House.

Please contact Lynn if you are unable to attend the open house to make arrangements to receive the supply lists. It is recommended that ALL new painting students attend the Open House and start with a beginner class.

This is a new class! We will pour paint in a combination of colors on an 11” x 14” canvas (no prep needed before class). This class is for all skill levels. We will paint grapes on Wine Glasses or a Glass Jar (any glass surface of your choice). I suggest bringing 2-4 glasses (2 if you are a new painting student). Glasses will be washable! MUD INTRO (A TEXTURE MEDIUM)

This is a introduction to “painting” with MUD, which is texture medium. You will learn to apply and move it into different shapes, including flowers. You can use MUD on most surfaces. There will be a demo at the Open House on Sept.17. Supply fee: $8 to cover all supplies for this class.

Paint a colorful Rooster on an 11”x14” canvas or wood plaque. We will be adding a distressed faux background on your surface first. You will basecoat your surface in a medium shade of brown before the class. Supply fee: $5– includes paints, color photo and hand outs. Pick up your supply list at the Open House.

POINSETTIA WITH MUD TEXTURE

Paint a Golden Poinsettia and berries. Add MUD for texture (see the MUD intro class on 10/10). You will need to basecoat your canvas or wood 8” x 10” surface in warm white (or paint on watercolor paper) before class. Warm white is a very light shade of beige. Pick up your supply list at the Open House.

This is a DMV approved 6-hour program that allows you to save 10% off your collision and liability insurance and up to 4 points off your driver record. (Be sure and check with your insurance company about any premium reduction). Films, lecture, and often-humorous class discussions will highlight the course.

FRESH BOXWOOD TREE

Jan will guide you through this class. This 14 to 16 inch tree is made of fresh-cut boxwood placed into an oasis so that it will last long past the holidays. Pronounced “Ray-Key” Reiki is a Japanese word meaning universal life energy, a natural approach to wellness. Reiki is a non-intrusive method of hands on healing to improve the health and quality of life for yourself and others. It activates the release of blocked energy, which restores and balances the body and mind. Now used widely in many hospitals. The evening will provide information and background on Reiki, and the opportunity to experience the Reiki energy. PAINT WITH PEGGY

Have you ever wanted to try oil painting? Are you afraid you can’t paint because you can’t draw? WELCOME to “Paint with Peggy”! In each class you will create an oil painting. Peggy is a certified Alexander Art Instructor and Wilson Bickford Painting Partner. Each evening the student creates a complete oil painting usually based on a Wilson Bickford design. These classes do not require drawing skills, and they are also NOT paint-by-number. At the beginning of class every student is provided with a blank canvas, brushes, palette of paints, etc. Then, through classroom instruction, each person creates their own, unique oil painting. September 18th: Homestead in the Hills– This cabin is nestled in the foothills of the mountains. As you paint this nostalgic scene, you will learn how to set a ‘mood’ and create depth in a painting. SUPPLY FEE: $25.00 (to be collected in class).

October 16th: Autumn Walk – Join this class to paint a vibrant fall scene that includes a couple just walking over the crest of a hill. They are on a path and you can almost hear the leaves falling in the woods. SUPPLY FEE: $25.00 (to be collected in class).

November 6th: Watching the Sunset – Sunsets are fun to paint! Join Peggy to paint a couple and their dog sitting on a shore watching the sun set across the lake. You can make the colors pastel or bold – depending on what you like! SUPPLY FEE: $25.00 (to be collected in class).

December 4th: Winter Lake – Tall, rugged mountains provide the backdrop for this beautiful winter landscape. Contrasting against the snow-covered mountains are dark fir trees along the shore of the lake. Peggy will guide you step by step as you use both a palette knife and brushes to create this striking painting. SUPPLY FEE: $25 (to be collected in class.

Ho’oponopono is a simple process of letting go of any heightened emotions within you and allow for healing of thoughts, feelings, words and action. Essentially, it means to make right with the people with whom you have relationships. It’s about “restoring your joy and happiness!” We are all connected and that means you are always impacting everyone around you just by your thinking, feeling, speaking, and you’re every action. For over 20 years Suzanne has been using the Hawaiian Ho’oponopono process with amazing results. It is a very effective life-changing tool. Getting Paid to Talk, Making Money with Your Voice is a single evening class that takes a realistic and entertaining look at the positive and negative components of building success as a voice actor in your area. Our instructor will discuss both the creative and business aspects of our field. In addition to having the opportunity to hear voice acting demos from working professionals, each student will have the opportunity to record a real script under the direction of our producer right there in class. Each student’s recording is then played back at the end of the session as a class finale. Throughout the class students are encouraged to ask questions and our instructor is always will to provide basic voice assessment to anyone attending.
