Mohonasen recently celebrated an outstanding group of athletes and coaches with the induction of its latest class into the Mohonasen-Draper Hall of Fame.
Among this year’s honorees was Coach Scott Sabourin, recognized for his 15 seasons leading the varsity football program. His dedication and leadership left a lasting impact on Mohonasen athletics and the many players who came through his program. He has 60 career wins, six winning seasons and eight trips to the Section 2 playoffs.
Dr. Lyndsay Martin ’06 earned recognition for her exceptional accomplishments in swimming and track and field. She made school history as Mohonasen’s first female swimmer to qualify for the NYSPHSAA championship meet and the first to win a Section 2 title in the 100 butterfly. She competed at the state level three times, finishing in the top 20 each time. Martin also participated for five years with Mohonasen’s varsity outdoor track and field team, as well as two years of indoor. She owns the school record for the high jump in both sports.
Joe Whipple ’92 was also inducted, honored for both his playing and coaching careers. A senior captain and standout defensive back on the 1992 team, he earned Section 2 First Team All-Defense honors. He later returned to Mohonasen as an assistant coach before moving on to a head coaching role at Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons. He continues to coach today at Schalmont.
The 2002 Mohonasen girls’ basketball team was also inducted, celebrated for capturing the program’s first Section 2 Class B championship. Coached by Monique LaMagna, with assistants Makensie Bayduss Bullinger and Fran Pugliese, the team defeated Schalmont in the finals at Hudson Valley Community College. The roster included Amanda Blackstone, Caitlin Horan, Kaelyn “Katie” Male, Patty Pugliese, Shannon Ausfeld, Theresa Ratzlaff, Lauren Turkisi, Megan Quivey, Kelly Barnes, Colleen Horan and Brittany Holden.
This year’s Hall of Fame class highlighted the deep tradition of excellence at Mohonasen, honoring contributions that have helped shape the district’s athletic legacy.
