AI Guide for Staff and Students

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an increasingly significant and visible technology in our daily lives. While AI offers many opportunities to enhance learning, streamline workflows, and foster creativity, it also presents challenges related to privacy, academic integrity and ethical responsibility. As part of Mohonasen Central School District’s commitment to preparing students for a future shaped by evolving technology, we are implementing AI guidelines to ensure its responsible and ethical use in our schools.

Our goal is to equip students with future-ready skills, including digital literacy and responsible AI usage. To achieve this, we have developed AI Ethics Guidelines for Staff and Students, which outline expectations for AI use in educational settings.

These guidelines emphasize:
Privacy & Security – Ensuring students do not share personally identifiable information (PII) when using AI tools.
Academic Integrity – Prohibiting the submission of AI-generated work as original student work and promoting proper citation practices.
Responsible Use – Encouraging AI as a tool for learning, not for circumventing critical thinking or academic effort.
Critical Thinking & Information Evaluation – Teaching students to critically evaluate AI-generated content and verify its reliability.

Students in grades 6-12 will have access to approved AI-powered tools, including Google Gemini, Google Notebook LM and Brisk Teaching. These tools were carefully selected because they align with our curriculum, support student learning, and meet strict privacy and safety standards. Many of the educational platforms already in use across the district also have AI built into their features, giving students additional opportunities to learn and create responsibly.

All approved tools are safe for school use and are monitored through our district’s web filters and cybersecurity measures. Educators may also demonstrate other AI platforms in class and guide discussions about their ethical implications, preparing students for responsible engagement with this technology.

To support families in guiding their children’s responsible AI use, we encourage open conversations about academic honesty, privacy, and the potential impact of AI-generated content. Additional information and family resources can be found on our Instructional Technology Parent Resource Page, which will also be linked in ParentSquare under “Links.”
