The end of the school year is upon us, which means it’s time to start planning your student’s summer experience. The Mohonasen Central School District offers many STEAM & Enrichment and Sports Camps for students. A printed version will be mailed to homes in early June.

Course offerings

French Camp – La Colonie de Vacances

  • For Students Entering Grades 4-6
  • Dates & Times: August 12-16, Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
  • Fee: $60
  • Instructor: Maureen Geagan
  • Location: Draper Room 114
  • Did you know 75% of people in the world do not know any English? You can make a difference by speaking to people in their language! Have fun with your friends while learning French with games, songs, and activities. Campers will also make crêpes, the delicious French treat!

Athledemics

  • For Students Entering Grades 4-7
  • Dates & Times: July 8-12, Mon-Fri, 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
  • Fee: $60

  • Location: Draper Room 90
  • Students will participate in games, sports and activities and then will make the connection that their math or science skills can help them to become better athletes or thinkers! Hence the name Athledemics: athlete plus academics. For example, They will play a game of wiffle ball and then figure out batting averages, or play basketball and study angles or probability statistics.  They will learn the science behind what makes a yo-yo work and how professional race car drivers use formulas to increase the speed of their cars. They will even meet a professional racer and sit an actual race car!

Nintendo Labo for Beginners

  • For Students Entering Grades 1-3
  • Dates & Times: July 15-August 16, Mon & Weds, 2:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
  • Fee: $60

  • Location: Bradt Room C2
  • Students will be introduced to Nintendo Labo and have the opportunity to use the Nintendo Labo toy-cons to complete a variety of activities and lessons aligned to the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards.

Nintendo Labo University

  • For Students Entering Grades 4-6
  • Dates & Times: July 15-August 16, Tues & Thurs, 2:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
  • Fee: $60

  • Location: Bradt Room C2
  • This course is designed for students who have had some experience with Nintendo Labo though it is NOT a requirement. They will participate in various lessons using the Nintendo Switch and Toy Cons that are aligned to the NYS Next Gen Learning Standards.  The students will also have opportunities to develop their own games and lessons using the newest Nintendo Labo kit. This kit allows students to code their own games for others to play.

The “MyCards” Experience

  • For Students Entering Grades 1-5
  • Dates & Times: July 15-19, Mon-Fri, 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
  • Fee: $60

  • Students will have the opportunity to design their own greeting cards which can be published for a small fee. Thank you cards, holiday cards, initials-you name it! The possibilities are endless. Learn the fundamentals of design and draw with a variety of art media. Each day will feature a new theme. An additional fee of $15 for students to order one box of cards.

Introduction to Landscape Painting with Acrylics

  • For Students Entering Grades 1-5
  • Dates & Times: July 15-19, Mon-Fri, 12:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.
  • Fee: $60

  • Location: Bradt Room K-1
  • Students will learn the fundamentals of painting using Acrylics, tabletop easels and canvas boards. They will bring in their favorite landscape photographs and learn simple strategies of how to translate the information from their pictures to boards. Additional fee of $10 to cover the cost of boards and additional mixing media.

Yoga Camp for Kids

  • For Students Entering Grades K-5
  • Dates & Times: August 5-9, Mon-Fri, 12:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.      
  • Fee: $60

  • Location: Bradt Gymnasium
  • In this camp kids will explore the ancient practices of yoga and meditation in fun, playful ways that incorporate lots of movement, music and art. Please send your yoga camper with a water bottle and a healthy snack.

Make, Play & Discover with Nintendo Labo Classroom – Session I

  • For Students Entering Grades 2-10
  • Dates & Times: July 8-12, Mon-Fri,  8:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.

  • This is a crash course focused on the Nintendo Labo Classroom pilot program developed by Nintendo, Institute of Play and our team here at Mohonasen.  We will be exploring how to make, play and discover using the Nintendo Labo Variety Kit, Robot Kit, Vehicle Kit and VR kit. You do not need to provide your own Switch devices, but you are welcome to if you prefer to use your personal save file and Nintendo account. Please note: Mohonasen CSD will not be held responsible for any damage or theft of personal Nintendo devices.

  • Learn everything about iMovie on the iPad and WOW your friends and family with your movie editing talents and with your cool movies! Digital Media Skills 101 – YouTube Academy

  • For Students Entering Grades 3-9
  • Dates & Times: July 22-25, Mon-Thurs, 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon

  • Students will learn how to create their own movie using the app of their choice and publish it to YouTube. We will investigate all the different security/privacy settings and the numerous tools that you have available.

    • Students will be using Chromebooks, iPads or their personal device to create digital media such as graphic design and digital audio.  Students will choose whether they would like to learn how to create a graphic design that could be sold to a business, or how to create their own song

      Learn to Speak Spanish with Songs, Games and Fun Activities

      • For Students Entering Grades 3-6
      • Dates & Times: July 15-19, Mon-Fri, 8:00-11:00 a.m.
      • Fee: $60

      • Beginning level Spanish. Basic vocabulary and conversations through music, games , technology  and of course a fiesta and a pinata to celebrate on the last day!

      Making Games: Board and Digital

      • For Students Entering Grades 8-10
      • Dates & Times: July 8-19, Mon-Fri, 8:00 to 12:00 noon
      • Fee: $60
      • Instructor: Astra Wijaya                    
      • Location: CAT Room 213
      • Week One will feature Making Board Games, including introduction and icebreaker games, introduction to modding a board game, brainstorm game ideas, playtest and game refinement, and presentations of the games. Week Two will feature Creating 2D Games in Unity, including introduction to run-cycle animation, learning to create levels in Unity, replacing running sprites in Unity and presentations.

      Mohonasen Soccer Prep Camp

      • Dates: Monday-Friday, July 22-26
      • Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
      • Grade levels: Entering grades 6-12
      • Cost: $100
      • Instructors: Clint DeMyer, Robert Stranahan and Adrian Salguero
      • Location: Mohonasen Turf Field
      • The camp will focus on 3 main pillars that prove to be crucial in any players development. The pillars that will be focused on are the Physical, Tactical, and Technical aspects of the game. We strive to create an enjoyable learning environment that focuses on building skills, confidence, and creativity that will elevate a players game at any level. All camp participants will receive a Mohonasen Soccer Training Shirt!

      Mohonasen Soccer Academy

      • Dates: Monday-Friday, July 29-August 2
      • Time: 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
      • Grade levels: Entering grades K-5
      • Cost: $50
      • Instructors: Clint DeMyer and Robert Stranahan
      • Location: Mohonasen Turf Field
      • The purpose of the Mohonasen Soccer Academy is to create an educational and fun environment dedicated to participants of all abilities. The camp will teach fundamentals, as well as introduce basic technical and tactical components of the game. Our goal is to not only improve the abilities of the future, but also foster enthusiasm of the sport.

      Soccer Strength Camp

      • Dates/Times: July 8, 9, 11, 15, 16, 18, 29, 30: 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.;  July 22, 23, 25: 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.; August 1, 5, 6, 8, 12, 13, 15: 9:00-11:00 a.m.
      • Grade levels: JV and Varsity Soccer Athletes
      • Cost: $50

      • Location: Mohonasen High School Weight Room
      • This camp is designed to build strength, agility, & speed for the upcoming fall school soccer season. The program is meant to reduce injuries and enable peak performance to optimize the athlete. Joint mobility, flexibility and various dynamic warm-ups combined with compound movements for athletes trying out for varsity or plan on playing in collegiate athletics.

      Mohon Girls Basketball Camp

      • Dates: Monday-Thursday, July 22-25
      • Time: 8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
      • Grade levels: Entering grades 3-8
      • Cost: $100
      • Instructors: Doug Holden and Josh Whipple
      • Location: Mohonasen High School Gymnasium
      • This camp is designed to be an instructional camp with a strong emphasis on the proper development of individual fundamental skills and overall game knowledge. Lunches will not be supplied. Lunch time will be 11:30am-12:00pm. Please send T-shirt size and athletes name to dholden@mohonasen.org no later than June 15.

      Boys Basketball Skills Camp

      • Dates: Mondays and Wednesdays, June 26-August 7
      • Time: 2:30 p.m.-4:00 p.m.
      • Grade levels: Entering grades 8-12
      • Cost: $90
      • Instructor: Ray Kearney, Josh Peck and Graham Macbeth
      • Location: Mohonasen High School Gymnasium
      • Basketball drill and skill work led by the Mohonasen Boys Basketball Varsity staff. Open to boys going into 8th-12th grades for the 2019-2020 school year.

      Mohonasen Youth Basketball Camp

      • Dates: Thursday, Friday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, June 27-July 3

      • Grade levels: Entering grades 3-7

      • Location: Mohonasen High School Gymnasium
      • Basketball skill and drill day camp led by the Mohonasen Varsity Boys Basketball coaching staff for boys and girls entering grades 3-7 for the 2019-2020 school year.

      Mohon Youth Track and Field Camp

      • Dates: Monday-Friday, July 15-July 19
      • Time: 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
      • Grade levels: Entering grades 1-8
      • Cost: $60
      • Instructors: Bill Sherman and Tom Howley
      • Location: Mohonasen Track
      • Join members of the Mohonasen High School Track & Field team and Coaches Sherman & Howley for a fun and exciting week learning all of the events in track & field.  This camp is geared for young athletes who want to learn more about the sport and also for experienced athletes who want to improve their performances. The camp will conclude with the annual Mohon Summer Olympic Games on Friday.  Who will will the Gold, Silver or Bronze? It could be you!

      Youth Athletic Development Camp

      • Dates: Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 29-August 30
      • Time: 8:00 a.m.-9:00 a.m.
      • Grade levels: Entering grades 5-8

      • This camp is for serious athletes only who want to improve their overall strength, conditioning, athletic ability, speed, and agility.

      Mohonasen Strength and Conditioning Camp

      • Dates: Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 15-August 30
      • Time: 11:00 a.m.-12:00 noon
      • Grade levels: Entering grades 9-12
      • Cost: $50 checks made payable to Mohonasen Sports Booster
      • Instructor: Ray Kearney
      • Location: Mohonasen High School Weight Room
      • This camp is for serious athletes only who want to improve their overall strength, conditioning, athletic ability, speed, and agility.

      Greater Rotterdam Road Runners

      • Summer Program
      • Dates: Mondays & Wednesdays, June 25-Aug. 8
      • Time: 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
      • Grade levels: Entering grade 7 and up (open to the public)
      • Cost: $60
      • Instructor: Bill Sherman (Varsity Level Coach)
      • Location: Mohonasen High School Track
      • This summer-long program will put you in the best condition of your life. Each participant will be provided with a personalized training program that will match their ability level and goals. We will focus on core strength & physical endurance. All running abilities are welcome. Coach Sherman is a lifelong distance runner having run over 100 road races and 10 marathons, including the prestigious Boston Marathon. He has coached athletes to 21 Mohonasen track records, and has had dozens of athletes qualify for the NYS Championships and NYS Qualifier track meets.
