| March 20, 2020

Dear Mohonasen Parents,

As Mr. Shine shared in his earlier communication, I hope this letter finds you and your family doing well. The sense of a typical day has changed for me much like it has for you, but even though it doesn’t look the same, I want to make sure that we remain connected as a Pinewood family. In an effort to do so, I will be recording a daily message and will be reading a chapter of a book that I hope students can listen to which will help us have a shared story and connection that we can all talk about upon our return to school. We certainly all understand the seriousness that COVID-19 has pressed upon our entire community and I hope that you are taking precautions to prevent the further spread. With that said, I just also wanted to echo Mr. Shine with how truly touching it is to have so many in our community offering support and resources to take care of our families.

We have created a “Grab and Go” breakfast and lunch option district-wide and through this have been able to meet one of our very basic needs for many of our families. We will also continue serving the families connected to the Backpack Program. In addition, if you are in need of resources, please contact the main office for assistance.

With the closure of school, we began by providing families with remote access to instructional resources to support learning from home, as well as paper packets with additional learning activities. While our closure is scheduled through April 1st, we also know that the closure could extend for a longer period of time, so this week, I have been planning with our teams of teachers remotely to provide online instructional support to deliver content and instruction. Please note that your child’s teacher(s) will be providing feedback on learning activities, if it applies. Video based lessons will also be provided for those who have electronic access and to ensure this is possible we have begun the roll out and distribution of Chromebooks to students/families in grades 3-5 that were in need and lack technology at home currently.

With the governor’s order today, I am unsure of the access to school in the coming weeks. With that being said, we have created a schedule, which is below to outline what each day of home learning can look like in an attempt to create a sense of routine. Individual teachers will be reaching out to give more specifics for their classroom and I am confident that together we will be able to overcome the challenges of this new experience.

The teachers will be planning for learning activities to cover ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies, as well as special areas, Music, Art, and PE. For students who receive more specialized instruction or related services, these teachers will be providing activities and/or videos to help develop and work toward their individual goals.

In reference to report cards that were scheduled to be provided on March 27th, our plan is to mail these out to everyone on this date, but this will be dependent upon secretarial staff being able to work in the building and determination of whether school is considered an essential service. As we determine what staff can or can not be in the school, we will proceed forward with the goal of meeting this desired deadline.

We appreciate your support and flexibility as we do our best to prepare home learning opportunities. I would encourage each parent to stay in contact with their child’s teacher(s) and reach out if you need anything. For continued updates you can also visit our district website and follow on Twitter @MohonCSD. Our school office hours are, 8-3 daily. Please note if there are any personal items that are needed from classrooms, for example, eye glasses, sneakers, please contact the main office and these items can be picked up in the main entrance of the school during the regular office hours. The main office can be reached at 518-356-8430 should you need any further assistance.

Pinewood Proud,

Jason Thompson
