2021 Esports Rocket League champions Noah Solt, Matthew Kriss, Blake Gannon, Angelo Maimone and Josh Bustelos along with faculty coaches Michelle Fraser and Bill Vacca as well as Rocket League Coach Andrew Cancilla.Congratulations to the Mohonasen High School Esports team for winning the New York High School Esports Championship in Rocket League.

Starters Noah Solt (captain, junior), Matthew Kriss (junior), Blake Gannon (sophomore) were joined by subs Angelo Maimone (sophomore) and Josh Bustelos (freshman) as they faced off against students from the Washingtonville Central School District for the state title on Dec. 16. The team was supported by faculty coaches Michelle Fraser and Bill Vacca as well as Rocket League Coach Andrew Cancilla (Mohon alum, class of 2021).

Teams qualified for the final through a 16-team virtual playoff earlier this month and met for the championship game at UAlbany’s state-of-the-art competitive video gaming arena, which is located on the Downtown Campus and features more than a dozen high-performance Alienware Computers and six Nintendo Switches.

The Northeastern Regional Information Center (NERIC), a division of Capital Region BOCES, started a cooperative service for esports in Fall 2018. The intention is to leverage esports to engage students within and beyond competitive gaming. In addition to the competitions themselves, esports promotes engagement, collaboration, college opportunities and STEM-related career exploration for students. The number of participating schools in the NERIC league continues to grow each season.

Great job, team!
