As the 2019 New York state legislative session gets underway, at least one Mohonasen student has a heightened interest in what the state’s policymakers will accomplish this year.

He’s Julian McWilliams, and he is one of nearly 70 students from across the region who was named to¬†Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara’s 2018-2019 Student Cabinet. The students assembled last month to meet with Santabarbara and his staff to discuss issues impacting K-12 education and to provide the lawmaker with student perspectives on education matters that could be addressed during the session.

Santabarbara represents the 11th Assembly District which includes 10 school districts in Schenectady, Montgomery and Albany counties.

At the December meeting, the students were challenged to work together to create a mock budget, balancing expenditures and revenues in the same way legislators — and school district leaders — are required to do annually to balance the state and school district budgets. During the exercise, the students were also able to learn about the varying needs of students from district to district and how funding often differs in suburban, rural and inner-city schools.

In the spring, the Student Cabinet will reconvene for a visit to the State Capitol to attend a hearing and learn more about the legislative process.

Well done, Julian! #WarriorWay #MohonProud
