| October 15, 2019

Draper Middle School and Mohonasen High School will be holding a parent education event from 5 to 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29.

  • From 5 to 6 p.m., Schenectady County Substance Abuse Prevention will have an interactive display called “Hidden Danger Bedroom” in the High School Auditorium lobby.
  • From 6 to 7:15 p.m., the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will hold a More than Sad session in the High School auditorium on suicide prevention and awareness.

Hidden Dangers

The “Hidden Dangers” mock bedroom setup encourages parents to search for clues of drug and alcohol abuse. The items hidden in the bedroom teach parents to identify and understand the hidden dangers and signs of drug and alcohol use by their teens, even if they don’t suspect that their teen might be using. After searching the bedroom, parents will learn about signs of alcohol and/or drug abuse, why and when to search, how the items are used that they found, and how to have a conversation with their child regarding their concerns. Additional resources will be made available as well.

More Than Sad

This program teaches parents how to recognize signs of depression and other mental health problems, initiate a conversation about mental health with their child, and get help.
