Draper physical education teacher Douglas Hallberg was presented with an award Friday night after being named Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year by the New York State Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NYS AHPERD).

Hallberg called it “incredibly overwhelming and humbling” to be recognized by his peers with this award. “There are so many deserving physical education teachers in this great state, and it’s an honor to even be considered among them,” Hallberg said.

Hallberg received his BSE in 1992 and MSE in 1997 from SUNY Cortland. He has been a physical education teacher for 23 years, 18 at Draper Middle School.

Hallberg was a building leader for the district’s $1.8 million Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) grant. Both through the grant and on his own, Hallberg attended more than 20 physical education conferences around the country in the last four years

He has presented the Draper physical education program to teachers at the local, state, regional and national levels in the last two years.

“Our middle school physical education program has been recognized across the country for its innovation and use of technology, and several local school districts have even come in to see what we do in our classes,” said Hallberg.
