Draper Middle School is preparing to host award-winning young adult author Ben Mikaelsen on Feb. 12 for a day of literary activities.

Winner of the International Reading Association Award and Western Writer’s Golden Spur Award, Mr. Mikaelsen has been featured nationally and internationally on television and received critical acclaim for his novels. Many Draper students are well-acquainted with the works of Mr. Mikaelsen, whose novel, “Touching Spirit Bear,” – winner of the 2002 American Library Association Best Fiction for Young Adults  – is part of the curriculum for all seventh-grade students. Many other Draper students purchased his books in advance of the visit to familiarize themselves with his novels.

Throughout the day, Mr. Mikaelsen will be involved in an array of events, including presentations for students and staff members, lunch with student contest winners, interviews with school newspaper journalists, conversations with high school and middle school English learners and ESL teachers, a writing workshop and book signings.

“We are so excited about this visit—and our students are, too,” Principal Debra Male said.
