District addresses school fight video
We are aware that there is a video circulating of an altercation that occurred on school grounds earlier this week. While we cannot comment on any specific student discipline situation, Mohonasen High School and district officials were aware of the incident at the time that it occurred and acted immediately in accordance to the district’s code of conduct. Student safety is our top priority and violence in our schools or on school grounds is unacceptable.
District officials are also aware that there were a number of student bystanders to this incident. This is a good time to remind students that anyone who is aware of the potential for or witnesses an act of violence or bullying has a responsibility to report it. Students who fail to report or otherwise encourage an incidence of violence or bullying by participating as bystanders may also be disciplined according to the district’s code of conduct and the Dignity for All Students Act.
Mohonasen Central School District officials are dedicated to creating a safe and respectful learning environment for all students, which is why a series of proactive safeguards are in place to prevent situations such as this. We are in the process receiving a “No Place for Hate” school designation by the Anti-Defamation League, and have a series of groups and initiatives in place that promote a safe and respectful school that is free of fear, bullying or violence.
Parents may wish to take this opportunity to discuss the Code of Conduct with their children and address any questions or concerns that they may have. Parents, students or staff members who would like to talk to a district official regarding this incident or any other incident of bullying or violence at school should contact their school principal, in this case Mr. Warren, or Superintendent Dr. Spring at 518-356-8200.
