Bradt Primary School and Pinewood Intermediate School are excited to participate in a math curriculum pilot of Eureka Math for the 2019-2020 school year for students in K through 5.  During the following school year (2020-2021), all teachers in K-5 will be using Eureka Math as the primary curriculum resource. As a district, we will be supporting classroom teachers with the implementation of this new curriculum with ongoing professional development, including workshops with our math coaches and training sessions with Eureka Math consultants both regionally and on-site.

About the Development of Eureka Math

Eureka Math is a Prekindergarten through Grade 12 curriculum written by a team of classroom teachers, coaches and mathematicians from all over the United States. Initially, the curriculum was commonly known as EngageNY because it was created in partnership between the nonprofit Great Minds (Eureka Math’s parent organization) and the New York Education Department (NYSED). After the terms of the contract with NYSED were fulfilled, Great Minds rebranded the curriculum as Eureka Math and continued to develop related resources.

As the writing team studied, the idea that mathematics is best taught as a logical, engaging story emerged as a design principle that continues to distinguish the Eureka Math trilogy from other curricula. The trilogy comprises:

  • A Story of Units (Pre K-Grade 5),
  • A Story of Ratios ( Grades 6-8, and
  • A Story of Functions (Grades 9-12).

Altogether, the curriculum tells the unfolding story of mathematics as expressed by the standards lesson by lesson through each grade, and throughout the course of a student’s Pre-K through Grade 12 career.

How can you help your child with Math?

A key component of our district’s implementation will be parent and community involvement.  One of the many great features of this curriculum is the parent resources it provides.

Here is the link to the Great Minds website, which will allow all parents to create a free account.  After you create an account you will find a variety of tools to help understand the exciting mathematical your child will take, including Parent Tips Sheets, Homework Helpers, Grade Level Road Maps, and videos of some of the important models students will use to develop a deeper conceptual understanding of mathematics.

Please also feel free to reach to your child’s teacher throughout the year should need any further information. We will be providing families with important information related to Eureka Math at our Open Houses and Parents as Learning Partners events.

We are very excited for you to partner with us and can’t wait to celebrate all of the success of your child throughout the year.
