Dear Grade 5 Parents / Guardians,

The 2017-2018 school year is quickly coming to a close. While I know it must be bittersweet that your child’s tenure at Pinewood is nearing its end, I hope both you and your son or daughter are excited for the next chapter at Draper Middle School. I am very excited to work with you and your child as he or she begins middle school. Below are some important upcoming events that will take place at Draper to help prepare your student for middle school.

First, you are cordially invited to an Information Night for incoming grade 6 parents at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, in the Draper Middle School Cafeteria. Important details regarding schedule, policies, and procedures will be presented. This event is geared towards parents/guardians. Students do not need to attend.

A brief orientation regarding our 1:1 Chromebook Initiative will also be presented at Information Night on May 17. All students at Draper will be provided a Chromebook to use at school and home for the 2018-2019 school year. A 1:1 Handbook, along with an Agreement Form and Acceptable Use Policy, which must be signed by student and parent, are available on the district webpage. Hard copies will be available at the Information Night. Parents will have the opportunity to submit the signed Agreement Form and Acceptable Use Policy that evening. Once the signed paperwork is turned in, your child will be set to receive a Chromebook at the start of the school year. Students cannot receive a Chromebook until his or her parent/guardian has participated in a Chromebook orientation and the signed paperwork has been submitted.

On Tuesday June 19, 5th grade students will visit Draper during the school day for a student orientation. They will meet the sixth grade team of teachers, counseling staff and administration. Students will also have a chance to talk to current sixth grade students about the transition from Pinewood to Draper.

Tours for sixth grade students will take place from 1-3 p.m. on Aug. 23, and from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. on Aug. 30. Students need only attend one of the tour dates. Students will have the opportunity to walk the building, check out grade 6 classrooms, find their homeroom, and practice opening a locker. Chromebook orientations for parents will be provided on these dates as well for parents unable to attend our Information Night on May 17.

Student homeroom letters and bus routes will be mailed home in late August. All Draper students receive their class schedule on the first day of school.

Finally, all grade 5 students are invited to Grade 5 Teen Town, scheduled for Friday May 18th from 7-8:30 pm at Draper. There will be a DJ, dancing, basketball, and other fun games for students to play. Admission is $2. There will be a sign in and sign out sheet at the door. Please remember that students should not have cell phones. A phone is available at school if a student needs to call home. If you are interested in chaperoning, please email: kimmimowery@yahoo.com.

I hope you and your child have a great end of the school year and awesome summer. I look forward to meeting you.

Respectfully,

Rick Arket
