My Interview with a Current Vice-Principal

I recently interviewed Mr. David Troy, the vice-principal of Mohonasen High School. We talked about his job, what he likes and what he doesn’t like.

Mr. Troy has been with the Mohonasen School District since 1988. Before becoming vice-principal, Mr. Troy was an eighth grade social studies teacher and also a special education teacher.

Mr. Troy has many different responsibilities with his job. He has to problem solve, discipline students, do teacher evaluations and try to encourage students to do well.

He doesn’t like having to punish students when they have made a mistake and didn’t intend to break the rules. There are also many good parts to his job. He likes to work with the kids. He really enjoys working with the students when they are planning the Senior Citizens Prom. The students put on a dance with music and refreshments for the senior citizens from Rotterdam. He also likes helping to raise money for the Special Ed students. It makes him feel good to donate towards a good cause. The vice-principal's job is much different from the principal’s. The principal has to do a lot more reports about the school and much more paperwork. Mr. Troy is happy being the vice-principal.

Mr. Troy has seen changes in students during his career. When he first started working, he felt the students had simpler, safer lives. After the Vietnam War, drugs started to be a big problem in schools. Drugs were not as popular with students before the war. Today’s students also have to deal with more violence, divorce and broken families. The academic standards have also gone up over the years, so students today need to work much harder at getting good grades. Mr. Troy feels that professional writers tend to only write about what teens do wrong and not about all their achievements.

Mr. Troy is married and has three daughters. Their ages are 28, 25, and 19. He also has three grandchildren. Their ages are 1, 4 and 9. He enjoys playing tennis, reading and watching college basketball.

Mr. Troy says that it is important to do well in school. It is also important to learn to get along with others and to respect people’s differences. You should try not to judge others and treat everyone fairly. When you enter high school, you should realize that this is the beginning of your adult life. He says you should try to focus on your strengths and interests so that you can become the best person that you can be.
