The Watts Riot was a violent disturbance made by protesters. Many African Americans were angry and upset with the way they were treated. Some whites were angry too and protested along side them in hopes that blacks would eventually have the same rights has whites.

On August 11th, 1965 was the start of a violent, bloody riot. That lasted for six days. Some of the things that caused the people of Watts neighborhood to riot was, not enough jobs or schooling were available to black people.

The riot involved 1,030 people. The police and the governor John A. McCone did all they could to stop the rioting. Such as arresting as many people as they could that were showing actions of rioting and setting up roadblocks. They were trying to help the people understand that there was no reason for riots, they only cause the community more problems.

This didn’t help at all. Thirty-four people were killed and almost one thousand people arrested and of course there were many injured due to this riot. The Watts Business was burned down leaving nothing left of it. The police officers finally got everything back to normal through out the night, by arresting many people and chasing some away with night sticks. It was also settled with some agreements made. There are now, more jobs and job training for blacks through CO-operative programs. Also there will be a new costly approach to educating black children, and having a greater emphasis by police for crime invention.

This is a riot and a time period that everyone will remember, especially the police officers. It was a horrible period of time for everyone to go through. Except the people who think they got something good out of this. It was also a sad and depressing time for someone that died in this riot and their family. Thirty-four people were killed in this riot and many were injured. Including police officers. Many people that run a business don’t have them anymore because teenagers, adults, or even kids ruined them, by throwing things like bricks at the windows or somehow destroying the building.
