Bike
Safety: Students
of all ages need to be more careful when riding bikes
& skateboards. Wearing
HELMETS
is
the most important thing they can do. They also
need to follow basic traffic rules. NYS Vehicle
& Traffic Law requires bicyclists to follow the
rules of the road. PARENTS need to teach and
enforce the rules. Riding on the right side of the
road, stopping at intersections, looking before turning
or crossing the road and having a properly working
bicycle are important basic steps that will keep all
bicyclists safe.
Several recent accidents show the
importance of these rules, especially the WEARING
OF HELMETS.
Parents can set a good example by also wearing a
helmet.

Bus Safety With
the new school year just starting it is a good time to
remind young students of school bus safety rules:
-Always
stay out of the road when at your bus stop
-Wait for the driver to signal you that it ok to cross
the road
-Only cross in front of the bus
-If you drop something or see something under the bus -
do NOT reach for it-wait until the bus
leaves and ask an adult for help getting the item from
the road
-When you get onto the bus take a seat as soon as you
can
-Stay seated with your legs in the seat and not in the
aisle
-Do not put your arms or head outside the bus window
-Talk quietly so you do not distract the bus driver
If
students follow these simple rules they will have a safe
year when riding to and from school.

Biccyle
Safety for Kids The number one tip and an area
that still goes neglected is the area of bicycle
helmets. Children through the age of 14
are required by New York State law to wear a helmet when
they ride a bike, skateboard or inline skate. Even
after they turn 14 they should be encouraged to wear a
helmet. Parents can set the example by wearing one
themselves. Check out these related links:

Bus Safety
Children
Get to the bus stop at least five minutes before the bus
is scheduled to arrive.
When the bus approaches, stand at least three giant
steps (6 feet) away from the curb, and line up away from
the street.
Wait until the bus stops, the door opens, and the driver
says that it's okay before stepping onto the bus.
If you have to cross the street in front of the bus,
walk on the sidewalk or along the side of the road to a
point at least five giant steps (10 feet) ahead of the
bus before you cross. Be sure that the bus driver can
see you, and you can see the bus driver.
Use the handrails to avoids falls. When exiting the bus,
be careful that clothing with drawstrings, and book bags
with straps don't get caught in the handrails or doors.
Never walk behind the bus.
Walk at least three giant steps away from the side of
the bus.
If you drop something near the bus, tell the bus driver.
Never try to pick it up because the driver may not be
able to see you.

Bicycle
Safety
New York State law requires children under the age of
14 to wear a bicycle helmet when ever they ride a
bicycle. Effective January 1, 2005 - Skateboards
are now included with bicycles. It's the LAW!!!
Parents can receive a traffic ticket, from the police,
if children do not have a helmet on. Follow
these rules for a safer ride:
Obey
the rules of the road--ride on the right side of
the road, with traffic.
Look both ways before crossing any road.
Look both ways when leaving a driveway.
Ride in a single file line when you are with others.
Obey traffic signs - especially stop signs!
Ride by yourself on a bike - do not carry passengers.
Do not carry packages - use a back pack.
Do not ride at night without lights and reflectors.
Effective
Jan. 1, 2005: Skateboards are now included with
bicycles.
