About Miss Dessingue

High School Bridges Program

Background: I am so excited to be a part of the Mohonasen community.  This is my second year teaching at Mohonasen and as the High School Bridges teacher.  I started in this position in October 2004 and I look forward to another exciting, purposeful year.  I graduated from the State University of New York at Geneseo with my Bachelors Degree in Elementary and Special Education and then went on to SUNY Albany for my Masters in Reading.  I began my teaching career as a Special Education teacher and I have also taught Reading, both in other districts.

Hobbies: I am an avid reader.  I read everything from comedy to drama to mystery novels and short stories.  My favorite books are The Princess Bride (William Golding), the Harry Potter series (J. K. Rowling), The Street Lawyer (John Grisham), and Son of the Mob (Gordan Korman). One of my favorite things is to sit in a comfortable chair and get lost in a good story and I love to talk about what I've been reading with anyone who enjoys this as well.  In my spare time (which is not much lately!!) I also like to watch movies and I'm addicted to the TV show, CSI: Crime Scene Investigators.  Some day I would also love to learn to fly planes and get my pilot's license.  When I'm not at school I like to travel.  I am hoping to take a trip to Ireland soon in the future.

This Year: My time at Mohonasen has been a great experience.   The school and community has been warm and friendly to me as I have become a part of the school.  My philosophy of education is that each student deserves a safe and appropriate education where the students are encouraged to learn and be successful.  Each child in an individual.  I try to develop a trusting rapport with each student and know who they are and what they need to be successful students.  Instruction is given in several ways to meet the needs of each student.  Reading is an essential skill which is involved in all facets of life so I build my instruction around this as much as possible.  I also include instruction using the areas that the students excel in.  I like to use visual examples when possible and to bring in real life applications of the content and curriculum we are completing in school.  Assessment and evaluation is based on my observations of their work, tests and quizzes, class and homework, and projects that allow the students to show what they really know.  Learning is a process and should be motivated by what the students are interested in and what they need to know in school and beyond the doors of Mohonasen.

My students in Bridges are wonderful students who work hard.  Their talents range from being excellent speakers, readers, and writers, to fabulous artists, and engineers and counselors in-the-making.  I learn something new everyday with the kids.  We are off to a great start and I know the rest of the year will be enlivening and time well-spent.

I highly value communication, especially with my students and their families.  The best way to get in touch with me is through email (sdessingue@mohonasen.org).  I can also be reached by phone or through written communication brought in by the student.  Any concerns or comments are always appreciated.  The more consistency the students have only increases their successes.  Since families know their student's in a different way than I do, I recognize the importance of learning from and with families.
