Mohonasen High School Technology Club students have been busy at work making whiteboards for classrooms across the district.
Whiteboards are like
individual chalkboards — which use dry erase markers
instead of chalk and a white erase board instead of
slate — that students can use at their desks or on a
learning rug in elementary classrooms. When a teacher asks a question such as, “what’s one plus one?” students can record their answer on their whiteboard and hold it up so that the teacher can see who is answering the question correctly or incorrectly.
“Whiteboards increase active participation during instruction,” said Bradt Principal Diane McIver. “Every student is held accountable. It helps teachers to quickly assess understanding.”
Other advantages to having whiteboards is that there is no more chalk dust to deal with for individuals who are allergic to it, and they are more durable than chalkboards.
When the Technology Club students went to deliver the finished whiteboards to Bradt classrooms, it was hard to tell who was more excited — the high school students for being able to visit their old teachers, or the Bradt students who got a new tool for learning!
The club made 437 1-foot square whiteboards for Bradt teachers to use with their students, and the orders keep rolling in from the other school buildings.
“The whiteboards can be purchased from outside vendors for about $5 each, but the
Technology Club is selling them for $1 each,” said Technology teacher Margaret Kelliher. “This covers the cost of materials and allows the club to earn a little bit of money to start other projects. It also allows us to offer a technology scholarship.”
