For nine days during Spring Break 2007, Jean Vause and Jessica Westervelt took a group of seven Spanish Honor Society members to Costa Rica.
During the trip the students and their chaperones had the opportunity to participate in many exciting adventures and activities.
The trip started off with a visit to a local volcano. The group got to hike to the edge of the crater and was lucky enough to have the clouds clear long enough to see the lake in the center. The following day the students, Mrs. Vause and Ms. Westervelt went kayaking in a man-made lake surrounding the Arenal Volcano. During the trip the participants got to see some of the incredible wildlife that is native to Costa Rica including two-toed and three-toed sloths, monkeys, iguanas, crocodiles, hummingbirds and coatises. The group also got to visit an indoor frog pond, which is home to a wide variety of frogs that are native to Costa Rica.
They also got to take several tours and hikes through the rainforest including a hike to see a 200-foot tall waterfall and a zip lining tour of the top of the rainforest.
Perhaps the most exciting experience of the trip for the tour group was their visit to a local elementary school. While visiting the school the students brought bags of school supplies donated by Staples to give to the students and organized a game of soccer with the local students.
The trip was a wonderful experience and one that none of the travelers will ever forget.
