On
Oct. 23, the Mohonasen Board of Education appointed
Rosemary Soltis as the new assistant principal at Draper
Middle School. Soltis’ first day will be after the
Thanksgiving break, on Monday, Nov. 27.
Prior to coming to Mohonasen, Soltis was the assistant
principal at Maple Avenue Middle School, which is part
of the Saratoga Springs School District, for three
years. Before becoming an assistant principal, she was
the assistant principal/dean of students at Sand Creek
Middle School and prior to that a high school guidance
counselor for seven years, both within the South Colonie
School District.
Soltis is no stranger to the Rotterdam area; she has
lived here for 11 years with her husband, George and
their five daughters.
“I chose to live in the Rotterdam area for the
community, family values and its focus on education,”
said Soltis. “Being a mother of five children between
the ages of 10 and 19 comes into play when I talk with
parents because I’m in the trenches myself. I can share
my positive and negative experiences with parents, and
gain from sharing these experiences.”
Soltis is enthusiastic about working closely with
Principal Debra Male to help improve English Language
Arts (ELA) test scores. She plans to draw from her
previous experience at Maple Avenue Middle School, where
she supervised the ELA department and co-lead the
department with the department chairperson.
“I am very excited about the “Essential Tasks” at Draper
Middle School,” added Soltis. “I have lived the
philosophy of infusing success into the day-to-day
curriculum, but never put it into words. Mohonasen has
built the program and I will be comfortable supporting
it, as it has been the way I operated with students in
previous schools.”
Soltis holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Kean
University in New Jersey. She holds a master’s degree in
Public Administration from the University of South
Dakota, as well as a master’s degree in Guidance and
Counseling from Russell Sage. Additionally, Soltis
earned her School Administrator and Supervisor (SAS)
certification from the College of Saint Rose.
