On
May 30, eleven members of the Peer Networking Support group presented at the Campbell House Psychological Conference on their activities and support of students with Asperger’s Syndrome.
The students shared their experiences, tips and strategies, and their compassion with local educators and administrators. One goal of the conference was to share a framework and provide encouragement for other schools to start a similar network in their schools.
The Peer
Networking Support group is a network of students who
are nominated and recommended by their teachers. Their charge is to support students with
disabilities — specifically Asperger's Syndrome — in negotiating social situations in their classes, in the hallways, the cafeterias, etc. The program
was started last year, and the district expanded it this year to include over 20 students in the network.
The group
collaborates between a BOCES program with Ken Jacobs and Anne
O'Brien-Teta and a district special educator, Martha
Mallon. Dr. Gina Cosgrove is a specialist in Asperger's Syndrome and is a consultant to the program.
We’re proud of the Mohonasen students who have
participated in supporting their peers and for being
role models in teaching others!
