When eighth-grade English teacher and Student Council co-advisor Linda Harrison received word from middle school parent Theresa O’Brien about the need for supplies for troops overseas, Harrison didn’t have to go very far for help.
Various groups within the middle school decided to purchase fleece blankets for troops to use during the cold desert nights. The challenge was that they would need to collect money and buy the blankets within four days, so that the soldiers would get them in time for the holidays. With such a short amount of time, the groups had to think of resourceful ways to make it happen.
A handful of middle school students decided to create a “Haunted Hallway” during the middle school Monster Mash Dance. Each student who walked down the hallway paid $1. The haunted hallway was such a success that the students collected $139 to go toward purchasing the blankets. The Student Council, led by Harrison and co-advisor Laura Gallelli, went around during lunch and advisory periods to collect loose change from students. Additionally, the Mohonasen Teachers Association (MTA) donated $45 to cover the remaining cost of the fleece blankets, plus $125 for the postage to mail them overseas. The groups pooled their money together and ended up having enough to buy 50 blankets!
O’Brien picked up the fleece blankets on Monday night, Nov. 13 and brought them up to Glens Falls, where they were mailed out on Tuesday, Nov. 14 to the 466 Medical Unit in Iraq.
Students also made cards for the soldiers, which were mailed out with the blankets.
