When
Bradt Primary School "headed up" a Locks of
Love initiative on Feb. 10 their goal was to get 50
donors. Not only did they reach their goal, but they
surpassed it by getting 60 people to come out and donate
their hair!
"Locks
of Love" is a not-for-profit organization that
accepts donated hair to make wigs for children under 18
years old who have lost their hair due to medical
conditions.
The
initiative was started by two Bradt teachers, Rita
Cicchinelli and Joanne Fuson.
"I
had a former student, Nicole, that was contemplating
making a donation. I offered to do it with her. Then I
remembered that Joanne was going to donate as
well," said Cicchinelli. "From there I took it
to the next level, and turned it into an event."
The
response was overwhelming. There were 17 children who
were eight or under that donated their hair, 17 donors
between the ages of eight and 18, and 26 donors who were
20 or older — including two teachers from Bradt and
one teacher from Draper who donated!
At the
event, three Mohonasen cosmetology students, along with
another classmate from BOCES Career & Technical
School, made the initial cut, and professional stylists
from Mane Design in Rotterdam finished the style.
"The
hairpieces Locks of Love provides are custom-made for
each child's head," said Fuson. "They are
vacuum-fitted, for use by those with complete loss of
scalp hair. The hairpiece forms a vacuum seal, like a
suction cup, and does not require adhesives."
Thank
you to all of those who donated!
