It
all started with two Girls Scouts who wanted to make an
impact on the community.
Draper
Middle School sixth-grade students, Erin Piseczny and
Patricia O'Brien, recently completed their Girls Scout
Bronze Award project by building four wheelchair
accessible picnic tables for Pinewood and Bradt
schools.
"The
girls wanted to give something back to their school,
teachers, the children and their community," said
Girl Scout Co-Leader Lisa Wend. "The project
involved fundraising, planning, calculating costs and
lumber needs, and organizing volunteers. They were able
to donate two tables to each school."
Before
starting the Bronze Award project the two students had
to complete three other requirements. They had to earn
two badges related to the Bronze Award project, complete
one of the Girl Scout Signs found in the Junior Girl
Scout Handbook, and earn the Junior Aide Award, the
Junior Girl Scout Leadership Award, or two of the
special Girl Scouting badges. After completing the first
three tasks, they were ready to tackle their community
project.
"We
chose this project because the district has been kind
enough to let us use the Pinewood art room for our
meetings for the past four years," said Piseczny.
"It seemed like a good way to give something back.
We hope the students and teachers enjoy them for many,
many years."
The
girls spent approximately 100 hours finishing the
project, which included sanding, staining and bolting
the tables together. "This project really taught
everyone how to work together," said O'Brien.
A
special thank you to Stock Building Supply who donated
many of the materials, and to the family members who
donated additional money to complete the project.
Next
year the girls plan to start their Girls Scout Silver
Award project, and eventually finish with the Girls
Scout Gold Award project.
