Walk through the Draper hallways on a Wednesday after school, and you will most likely find students and teachers
exercising and smiling.
This is all part of the new Fun Fitness Club at Draper Middle School, which helps students and faculty members of all ages and fitness levels practice healthy lifestyles every other Wednesday after school.
“It’s not about weight loss,” said Melissa Goncerz, middle school health teacher and Fun Fitness Club organizer. “It’s about staying healthy and meeting new people.”
Each time the club meets they do some sort of physical exercise to increase their heart rate. Whether it be walking lunges or stretching, club members are asked to work at their own pace.
“They don’t have to be good at it. It’s stuff that they can be accepted for,” said Goncerz.
Goncerz reminds club members that practicing healthy habits should be a daily goal and that they should try and exercise at least one more time during the week, on top of what they are already doing in the Fun Fitness Club. They also get a nutrition tip and a physical activity tip each meeting day.
“This is the first year of the Fun Fitness Club and I am glad that we could do it,” said Goncerz. “The students enjoy it, so maybe next year we will meet every Wednesday.”
At the end of the year, prizes will be awarded to club members who participated the most, as well as for various other wellness accomplishments.
