The
seventh- and eighth-grade Draper Middle School spring
concert was a little out of the ordinary this year.
The
choir performed a crowd favorite, "The Lion Sleeps
Tonight," arranged by Jeff Funk, the orchestra
played a beautiful "Japanese Lullaby," by
Keiko Yamanda, and the eighth-grade women's choir sang
songs such as "Play Me a Simple Melody" by
Kirby Shaw and "Hushabye Mountain" by Andy
Beck.
When
the seventh- and eighth-grade band was ready to play,
band teacher Mr. Varga came out to tell the crowd that
he had a surprise.
A renowned conductor and writer from
California, Sean O'Loughlin, arranged a special song
called "Mountains of Mohon" for the middle
school band to play. Not only did he arrange it for the
district, but he actually made the trip from California
to Rotterdam to be the guest conductor.
This
was the first time that "Mountains of Mohon"
had ever been played in public.
Congratulations
to all of the music students for doing such a wonderful
job, and thank you to Sean O'Loughlin for writing a
special song for the Mohonasen School District!
Thank
you to music teachers and directors Ms. Gabriel, Ms.
Kondenar and Mr. Varga.
