On Tuesday, April
17, Miss Cassino’s third-grade class had a very important visitor! Mr. Nuding, his wife and his son, Jacob Nuding, a fifth-grade student at Pinewood, all came to the classroom to show the students pictures and explain to them what it is like to be a soldier’s family.
Mr. Nuding is a member of the 42nd Infantry (“Rainbow”) NY Army National Guard Division. Mr. Nuding was stationed in Tikrit, Iraq. He was in charge of 160 soldiers, which included Battalion Headquarters staff, motor maintenance, repair mechanics, cooks and intelligence analysts. Mr. Nuding managed training at the mobilization site, ensured soldiers successfully completed all training requirements, managed convoy and other transport movements out of the country, and much more. Mr. Nuding was awarded a Bronze Star for the deployment of all soldiers without any combat injuries.
Mr. Nuding showed the class many pictures of the palaces, vehicles, the surrounding area and many of the tools used in combat. He also brought in his Bronze Star, Iraqi money, maps and small flag pins for the entire class! Mrs. Nuding and Jacob Nuding spoke about what it was like having a member of their family away for so long and the things they did to help them through the days.
Miss Cassino’s class put together packages to send out to a Platoon of 25 men and women. They have also been writing letters to the troops to show them their support. They hope to receive a letter back, but the students understand that they are very busy over there and that they are doing this to make our troops smile and to warm their hearts.
If you are interested in supporting our troops please contact Soldiers’ Angels at 615-676-0239 and someone will get back to you with an address and number of troops.
