Once one Pinewood student spots Principal Dr. Michael Johnson in the cafeteria with his jacket and hat on, they all follow.
Johnson resembles the “Pied Piper,” with a line of energetic students following him out to the playground for a friendly game of kickball.
Each day, when the weather cooperates, Johnson — and sometimes Assistant Principals Michael Klugman and Laura Sagan — play outside with students during lunchtime. The activity of
choice is usually kickball (played with a volleyball so it doesn’t go too far), but sometimes it is soccer or running around a homemade track.
This initiative gets students outside in the fresh air, and gets them moving, which enhances the district’s Wellness Policy. It
also cuts down on discipline issues because students are outside spending time with their principal and “official pitcher!”
