Picture of students in GE mentoring programMaking connections: Mohonasen students meet with GE mentors

More than 30 students will meet with Mohonasen math teacher Ms. Zych and math administrator Ms. Bromley for eight Wednesdays in the coming months to board a bus and head to the main GE plant in Schenectady. There, they will meet with engineers either one-on-one or in small groups, according to the math courses they are taking ranging from Regents Algebra all the way up to Pre-Calculus.

This program benefits both students and engineers, building a bridge that gives Mohonasen students the opportunity to develop relationships beyond the district and learn math from a new perspective. It represents a significant commitment for students, as they leave campus around 3:30 p.m. and return just before 6 p.m. Many of the tutors have come back year after year, some for all six of the years the program been in place, seeking to meet new students and to see how the students they have worked with in the past are doing now.

The program runs every fall and spring semester, for approximately eight weeks at a time. Students can get forms from their math teachers or on-line approximately a month before the session starts. The next applications will be available in late March 2009.
