Mohonasen
High School students, teachers and community members
commemorated the tragic six-year anniversary of
September 11 through art in the school's courtyard.
"This monument is a way to
capture and remember September 11 in a way that tries to
highlight the positives that came out of such a
catastrophic event," said High School Principal Patrick
McGrath.
The artwork titled,
"Perpetual Rejuvenation," was constructed last spring
and over the summer by three Mohonasen students and
recently retired Mohonasen High School art teacher, Lars
Turin. The three students who created the moving
sculpture are Mohonasen High School senior Devis Ceci,
and former high school seniors Joe Jasenski and Nick
Tommasone. The sculpture consists of a broken glass
facade, which could be interpreted as representing
strength and determination.
"I wanted to leave
something behind," said Turin. "I hope that you are
inspired, motivated and live your dreams with all your
heart, and it will take you places."
Michael Saccocio,
Director of the City Mission of Schenectady and former
Deputy Mayor of Schenectady, was the guest speaker at
the event.
"This event is a lesson
for us and we can choose how we respond," said Saccocio.
"We can choose to do good in the midst of it."
There was a
district-wide moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., which is
when the first airplane hit the Twin Towers.
The original plan was
to have the entire Class of 2008 outside in the
courtyard during the ceremony, but it was not possible
due to the inclement weather. The ceremony was instead
broadcast to all of the high school classrooms for
students and teachers to see.
Special thanks are
extended to area businesses and community supporters who
