Assemblyman George Amedore attended Mohonasen’s Board of Education meeting on March 10 to discuss the Governor’s proposed budget and what it means for the district.
The 2008-09 proposed State budget is five percent over last year’s budget. “We’re spending more than we’re taking in which leaves us in debt,” said
Amedore.
The Governor’s proposed budget calls for increased funding for Universal Pre-Kindergarten, requires schools to shoulder preschool special education costs, shifts Foundation Aid to high needs districts, and reduces BOCES Aid.
Mohonasen would see $19.3 million in total State
Aid under the proposed budget, with Foundation Aid increased by $1.46 million, Transportation Aid increased by $162,555 and a $77,405 decrease in BOCES Aid.
Amedore also talked about the idea of the “New York State Property Tax Payer Protection Act,” which would impose a cap on school spending.
Meanwhile, Mohonasen’s Budget Review Committee has been devoting many long hours to review the district’s proposed budget. They are expected to share their recommendations with the board in late March.
The Mohonasen Board of Education expects to adopt the budget on April 21, which will then go before district voters on Tuesday, May 20.
