To: All athletes on the boys and girls indoor and outdoor track and field teams, cross country teams, and anyone interested in raising money to improve our track and field facilities
Date: This Summer – Arrival Time: Saturday, July 12, 2003, 9:45 am
Start Time: Saturday, July 12th 10:00 am
Pick Up/End Time: Sunday, July 13th 10:00 am
Place: Mohonasen Track
How it works:
This summer the track and field teams will be running a 24 Hour Run-a-thon. Student athletes will be organized into groups of 5-10 people. The 24-hour period will be broken up into one-hour time slots. Each group will be assigned to run during several one-hour time slots. There will be a schedule listing these time periods, which will rotate so that all groups have the same number of one-hour time slots to run in. For example, beginning Saturday, July 12th at 10:00 am sharp, the first group of athletes will run until 11:00 am, group 2 will run from 11:00-12:00 Noon, and so on. This is a continuous relay, so there will be one person running on the track at all times. The groups may choose how they will run for that time period (i.e. everyone runs one lap at a time for one hour, 10 minutes each for a mile, a mile at a time, etc.). The key is: WE NEED TO COMPLETE AS MANY LAPS AS WE CAN IN 24 HOURS!!!!!
You will need to collect pledges from now until July 11th. By using the attached sheet, collect as many pledges as possible. Your goal is to collect pledges and/or donations from at least 20 people (ask relatives, teachers, friends, neighbors, Mohonasen alumni, etc.). When you find someone who would like to support our program, take down their name, address, phone number, and amount they would like to pledge. Pledges and donations that are collected will be based on how many laps YOU can complete individually. Here are the minimum pledges:
$1.00 per lap: For example, if you run a total of 15 laps in that 24 hour period, they would owe you $15.00.
$10.00 Donation: We are accepting donations instead of a pledge per lap.
Remember, these donations are minimum, so people may donate or pledge as much as they would like to.
What to say when collecting pledges:
Our track and field team is going to be participating in a 24 hour run-a-thon in July. We are raising money to improve our track and field facilities at the school. We would appreciate any pledges or donations you could make to support our program. Since the athletic budget has been drastically reduced we would use this money to purchase modern equipment such as:
1. A new set of hurdles for the track (approx. $3,600): Have you seen our hurdles? Most of them are held together buy athletic tape.
2. Adjustable steeplechase barriers (approx. $8,000): We currently only have barriers that are at the boy’s height and do not adjust– these are necessary to order to run the girl’s steeplechase for large invitationals and qualifiers.
3. Starting blocks (They are falling apart and we only have 4 usable pairs)
4. Any other equipment necessary to improve our facilities.
You should tell potential sponsors that you will collect the money during the week following the run-a-thon. You will hand in the pledge sheet and money to the Athletic Office at the High School no later than Friday, July 18th, 2003.
What to bring:
You will need to bring any equipment needed as if you are going on a camping trip. Such items include:
· Running gear: Sneakers, shorts, shirt, etc.
· Tents or tarps
· Grills
· Sleeping bags, blankets, pillows
· Rain jackets
· Games: board games, frisbees, etc.
· Flashlights
· Bathing Suits, Towels
· Showering Supplies
· Change of clothes (besides running gear)
· Food & Drinks: Anything for a barbecue, snacks, etc.
What else will we be doing?
We will need parent volunteers for the run-a-thon. Any help supervising athletes, counting laps, and assisting with activities and food preparation would be greatly appreciated. We will have one hour set aside during the day on Saturday, from 4:00 pm-5:00 pm, for coaches, parents, and siblings to run in the run-a-thon. This will be your chance to support our athletes and our program. So please, come out and RUN!!
Throughout the 24-hour period, we will have activities planned. Lunch and dinner will not be provided, so we are responsible for our own meals. Any food, drinks, and items necessary for a barbecue will be greatly appreciated.
If you have any questions, please contact Nikki Steele or Tim McNamara at 356-8300. Thank you for you support!!
