Freshman Project

 

This project is in direct correlation with New York State Learning Standards for Physical Education.

 

Standard 3:

            Students will be aware of and able to access opportunities available to them within their community to engage in physical activity. They will be informed consumers and able to evaluate facilities and programs. Students will also be aware of some career options in the field of physical fitness and sports.

 

Informed Consumer/ Spectator

 Goal:  The goal of this project is for the student to become an informed spectator of sporting events.

 

Directions:  Attend one Mohonasen athletic contest of your choice. Important: You cannot be a participant at any level of the sport you will be observing. Example: If you are on a Mohonasen soccer team you cannot observe a boys or girls soccer game as part of this project.  Type a 1-2 page report in paragraph form double spaced using 12 pt. font on this event.  Place your name, teacher, period and days of class on top of your project.  Include in the report:

 

  1. Name of the contest or event and date.
  2. Who are the competitors?
  3. Cost, if any.
  4. Summary of the events/contests (quarter scores, half-time score, important plays or comebacks, etc.). Don’t just list, discuss.
  5. Include any programs, flyers or brochures from the event.
  6. List any safety measures and precautions that you observe in regards to the facility, playing fields, and for the participants involved.
  7. Include at least one paragraph of comments on sportsmanship of the competitors/coaches/ fans in a negative or positive observation. Give specific examples and discuss thoroughly.
  8. Enjoyment factor. Why did you like or dislike the events? Discuss your thoughts on the sport and the event you observed.

 

Due:  Completed project will be due Thurs. Oct. 11th or Fri. Oct.12th (depending on the day you have class) and is worth 20 points on your 1st quarter grade.

          Five points will be taken off your grade for each school day the project is late.

          No credit will be given after Mon. Oct. 22nd.

          A schedule of the 2007-2008 Mohonasen interscholastic contests will be posted online and on the bulletin boards next to both girls and boys P E. offices that will help you pick the events you will be observing.

 

 


Sophomore Project

This project is in direct correlation with New York State Learning Standards for Physical Education.

Standard 3:              Students will be aware of and able to access opportunities available to them within their community to engage in physical activity.  They will be informed consumers and able to evaluate facilities and programs.  Students will also be aware of some career options in the field of physical fitness and sports.

Goal:  The goal of this project is to make students aware of and able to access opportunities within their community to engage in physical activity.

Experience Project:  Our community has a wealth of programs and facilities for recreation and physical fitness.  Examples of programs include Mohonasen Adult Education, Town of Rotterdam Youth and Recreation, youth athletic programs (Capital District Youth Basketball League, Little League) and private health clubs.  Examples of facilities include Town and NY STATE PARKS, hiking trails, golf courses, fitness clubs, ski resorts, and swimming facilities.

Directions:  You must contact one program/facility either in person or via the telephone in the Rotterdam or Schenectady area, conduct an interview, and report your findings.  This project is worth 20 pts. on your 3rd quarter grade.  The project must be 1-2 pages typed, 12 pt. font, double-spaced, and stapled.  The project heading must include sophomore project, the student’s name, class period and days (ace or bdf), and teacher.  Include any handouts or fliers from the facility. You must obtain the following information and discuss in paragraph form:

a.)     Location of the program/facilities.

b.)      Available dates and times or length of the program.

c.)     Cost to use the facility or to join the program.

d.)     In terms of fitness, what are the benefits of the facility or program?  Any disadvantages?

e.)     What is the program/facility meant for?

f.)       What qualifications or skills do you need to use this facility/program?

g.)     Who are the instructors at these facilities, are they qualified, and what are the qualifications?

h.)     Why would you enjoy this program or facility?

Due March 1st  or 2nd  (the day you have PE class)

*Students lose 5 points per day (not per PE class) the paper is late.  Papers WILL NOT be accepted after March 8th.   Hand written papers are unacceptable and will not be graded.

Junior Project

 

This project is in direct correlation with New York State Learning Standards for Physical Education.

Standard 3:              Students will be aware of and able to access opportunities available to them within their community to engage in physical activity.  They will be informed consumers and be able to participate in and evaluate facilities and programs.  Students will also be aware of some career options in the field of physical fitness and sports.

Goal:  The goal of this project is to get students to participate in at least 30 minutes of physical activity at a program or facility in their community.

Experience Project:  Our community has a wealth of programs and facilities for recreation and physical fitness.  Examples of programs include Town of Rotterdam Youth and Recreation, youth athletic programs (Capital District Youth Basketball League, Little League) and private health clubs.  Examples of facilities include Town and NY STATE PARKS, YMCA, hiking trails, golf courses, racket clubs, fitness clubs, and swimming facilities.  You may not use Mohonasen’s facilities for this project.

Directions:  You must go to and participate in at least 30 minutes of physical activity at one program/facility in the Rotterdam or Schenectady area and write about your experience.  This project is worth 20 points on your 4th quarter grade.  The project must be 1-2 pages typed, 12 pt. font, double-spaced, and stapled.  The project heading must include junior project, your name, date, class period and days (ace or bdf), and teacher.  Include any handouts or fliers from the facility. You must obtain the following information and discuss in paragraph form:

a.)     Location of the program/facilities.

b.)      Available dates and times or length of the program.

c.)     Cost to use the facility or to join the program.

d.)     In terms of fitness, what benefits did you experience at this facility or program?  Any disadvantages?

e.)     What are the characteristics of the people that use this facility (gender, age, ability, etc.)?

f.)       What qualifications or skills do you need to use this facility/program?

g.)     Who are the instructors at this facility, are they qualified, and what are their qualifications?

h.)     Why did you enjoy this program or facility?

Due May 17th  or 18th  (the day you have PE class)

*Students lose 5 points per day (not per PE class) the paper is late.  Papers WILL NOT be accepted after May 24th.   Hand written papers are unacceptable and will not be graded.

*You must have the assignment verification sheet signed and attached to your project.  Papers will not be accepted without this form.

Senior Project

 

This project is in direct correlation with New York State Learning Standards for Physical Education.  The goal of this project is for students to interview an individual who has a career in the field of physical fitness or sport.

Standard 3:              Students will be aware of and able to access opportunities available to them within their community to engage in physical activity.  They will be informed consumers and be able to participate in and evaluate facilities and programs.  Students will also be aware of some career options in the field of physical fitness and sports.

Experience Project:  Our community has a wealth of career options in the field of physical education, sport management, fitness, and sport.  Examples of careers include Physical Education Teacher, Coach, Athletic Trainer/Sports Medicine, Exercise Physiologist, Personal Trainer, Nutritionist, and Sport Management (Marketing Director, Ticketing Manager, Group Sales) etc.  There are many facilities that you can contact in order to interview an individual in this career field, including sports medicine clinics, schools, health clubs/fitness facilities, Pepsi Arena (River Rats, Attack, Conquest), Minor League Baseball Parks (Tri-City Valley Cats), and sport specific training facilities (Hayner’s Sports Barn, etc.).  If you are unsure of your choice of interview, please ask your physical education teacher to clarify the instructions.  You may not use individuals that work at Mohonasen for this project.

Directions:  You must go to and interview ONE individual with a career in the field of physical fitness or sport.  You cannot conduct this interview on the phone; it must be conducted in a professional manner in person.  You should choose to interview someone whose job interests you.  This project is worth 20 points on your 2nd quarter grade.  The project must be 1-2 pages typed, 12 pt. font, double-spaced, and stapled.  The project heading must include senior project, your name, date, class period and days (ACE or BDF), and teacher.  Include any handouts or fliers from the person you interview. You must obtain the following information and discuss in paragraph form:

Due Dec. 7th  or 8th  (the day you have PE class)

*Students lose 5 points per day (not per PE class) the paper is late.  Papers will not be accepted after Dec. 14th.   Hand written papers are unacceptable and will not be graded.
