This Month ...

April is National Poetry Month!

American poet Robert Frost called poetry "a way of taking life by the throat." Take life by the throat this month! April is National Poetry Month, and we want to CELEBRATE!

Find "30 Ways to Celebrate" at The Academy of American Poets. Ever wondered what a dactyl is? Or an alexandrine? What’s hyperbole? Find out with FactMonster’s Glossary of Poetry Terms. Click on Infoplease to find a variety of resources on poets, poetry terms, poetry sites, and more.

Budding poets should click on Poetry Magic for writing tips and techniques that will help you get your creative juices flowing.

Earth Day:

Earth Day was created in 1970, and will be celebrated this year on April 22. With everything we are learning about global warming these days, it is more important than ever to become part of the solution. Click on Earthday Network to learn more.

Autism Awareness Month

According to the Autism Society of America, autism is a "complex developmental disability" that is "defined by a certain set of behaviors." It is a "spectrum disorder" that affects individuals differently and to varying degrees. Increased awareness this disability is important for all of us in the  Mohonasen community. The more we know, the better we can be. Learn more at the Autism Society of America, and check out the special library window display (created for us by the Peer Network Support Group).

Check out some new series

We've got some new series books this month. The Rough Guide, better known for their travel books, has put together a great series of Guides to Music (includes Punk, the Blues, Opera, Hip-Hop, and World Music). Find them in the music section.

We've also got a new Smithsonian series. This beautifully written and illustrated set includes stars, gems, rocks, trees, butterflies, and more.

  Check them out & enjoy!

Our Featured Author ... Neal Shusterman

Author Neal Shusterman grew up in Brooklyn, New York, where he began writing at an early age (following the encouragement of his 9th Grade teacher). He went on to attend the University of California at Irvine, where he made his mark on the UCI swim team, and wrote a successful humor column.

Within a year of graduating, he had his first book deal, and was hired to write a movie script.

Shusterman's first novel, The Shadow Club, was published in 1988 (book one in a 2-book series). Since then, he's written more than 20 books. His numerous fans consider his stories "creepy," "bizarre," and "cool." Find some of his titles on the shelves or in the library catalog today. And check out the author's official website for some cool graphics, as well as more info on books, games, TV, and more.

Unwind: "In a society where unwanted teens are salvaged for their body parts, three runaways fight the system that would 'unwind' them ... Brought together by chance, and kept together by desperation, these three unlikely companions make a harrowing cross-country journey, knowing their lives hang in the balance ..." (Book Description)

Darkness Creeping: ""To borrow a phrase from this collection, Shusterman's writing can 'scare a gargoyle right off its foundation.' And that is precisely why fans of the author ... will reach hungrily for this title, which includes tales both new and newly available ... " (Booklist)
