How Students Qualify

Children can qualify for Extended Day Kindergarten at two times during the year.  The children who are offered the program need additional support in the area of Language Arts.

Beginning of the year:  All Kindergarten children are given the PALS assessment during the first month of school.  This test assesses the following skills:  rhyme awareness, beginning sound knowledge, lower-case letter recognition (out of order), letter/sound knowledge, and sound spelling (spelling words as they sound phonetically).  The benchmark for entering Kindergarten is a score of 28.  Children that score lower than the benchmark are offered the EDK program.  Children who are the most academically needy will be given preference.

January:  The children who started receiving EDK services at the beginning of the year are reassessed using the PALS test in January.  All children who score satisfactorily on the assessment and are achieving at expected levels in their regular Kindergarten class will be released from the EDK program.  The vacancies will be offered to new children based on their January Language Arts assessment and teacher recommendation.
