Terms of Presidency

                President

                     1961-1963     

  John Fiztgerald Kennedy was elected president in 1961. He was the youngest person  ever  to be elected president.

Mr. Kennedy was our president for  three years. Young people especially liked him. Some say he was   the most popular president ever.

He was the thirty-fifth president of  the U.S., and was highly respected by many people.

People liked him because he was a fair man.

Achievements

 

President Kennedy achieved many  things in his life.

He and his wife, Jacqueline,  won a Nobel Peace Prize.

John F. Kennedy   tried to promote world peace and friendship. In his first year at the White House he helped congress pass a major housing bill, a law that increased the minimum wage.

He is also known for starting the Peace Corps. He passed a bill to lower  tariffs and created money  that allowed congress to send a man to the moon in 1970.

Kennedy worked hard to pass a civil rights bill that would allow blacks the right to vote, the right to attend public schools, and to have equal access to jobs and public places. Kennedy's accomplishments helped make the world a better place.

World Events

[1961- 1963]

1961- The Soviet Union sent  the first person to the moon. His name was Yury Gaqarin.

1961- The Bay of   Pig  invasions took place.

1962- In this year Algeria won independence from France.

1962-  A nuclear war is narrowly avoided between United States and Soviet Union in the Cuban missile crises.

1963- President Kennedy was assassinated.

   His Influences

    John F. Kennedy was influenced by many people. One person who inspired him  the most was Theodore C. Sorenson. Sorenson wrote many of President Kennedy's speeches. He also advised all of Kennedy's work. President Kennedy admired Theodore a lot.

 

 Life in the White House

In the White House there are 22 rooms. Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy were known for  their attempts to make the White House the cultural center of the nation. They frequently held dinner parties, in which they invited writers, artists, poets, scientists, and musicians. One year  the Kennedy's held a reception for all the American winners of  the Nobel Prize. The reception was held to honor  the talented people who made outstanding contributions to their field during the past year.


The Assassination

    On November 22, 1963 Kennedy was in Texas trying to gain support. After having lunch he and his wife left in a motorcade. As they approached an underpass two shots were fired. The second shot was the one  that killed President Kennedy. The bullets were fired from  the sixth-story window of a nearby warehouse. The assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, was arrested. Oswald was shot and killed by Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby, while being transferred from one jail to another .  Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in as President less than two hours after John F. Kennedy died.
