Fourth-graders learn how living science relates to their own backyard —
Mrs. Lester's 4th-grade class had a special guest November 24. College of Saint Rose biology professor Dr. David Hopkins spent a few hours working with the students on concepts of classification. The students learned how autotrophs

require photosynthesis while heterotrophs do not (picture shown). The students worked inpairs to collect samples (leaves and fungus to name a few) of each. Back in the classroom, they practiced making a food chain and learned how it relates to natural law. Mrs. Lester says, "This is a wonderful opportunity to relate what we learn about living science in 4th-grade to the natural environment they interact with in their own backyard." The graphic below depicts some of the concepts the students learned.
