READING WORKSHOP

We will be having Reading Workshop at the beginning of everyday.  This will consist of your child quietly reading books out of our "browsing baskets" geared toward their own personal reading level and interest and "Reading Around the Room" various poems, songs and literature your child has learned during whole-group instruction.  Students will be reading individually, with reading buddies and in small group settings.

WRITER'S WORKSHOP

We will be having Writing Workshop 2-3 days each week.  Your child will be keeping their writing pieces in their red writing folder.  The purpose is not to write a complete story, but an entry about anything at all.  Students will be encouraged to begin Writing Workshop by drawing pictures, they may then graduate to drawing pictures with labels or explorative writing telling a little bit about their picture.  Children are encouraged to write and draw about what is meaningful to them.

GUIDED READING

Guided Reading is done 1-2 times per week in a small group setting beginning in January.  Students are asked to read the same book at their own personal reading level.  Students read simultaneously, but not together and at their own pace.  I walk around listening to the students read.  This helps me to understand the reading strengths and weaknesses of your child.  While I am walking around I listen to hear what types of reading strategies your child is using to figure out difficult words and to listen to your child's reading fluency.
