Please read the following information regarding Guided Reading. What is Guided Reading? Guided reading provides students with the opportunity to practice reading strategies with the teacher's support in a small group setting. Students read books with other students who are reading at or about the same level. The stories offer the students a minimum of new things to learn, in other words it will not be too difficult but not too easy either. Students work on developing their understanding of stories, vocabulary, reading strategies, and learn about new genres. What are leveled books? Leveled books are books organized by their difficulty ( A books being the easiest to Z books being the most difficult). Students practice reading strategies and increase their sight word base at each level until they demonstrate the ability to read and comprehend stories at a specific level independently. They are then moved up to the next level. Click on the link above to read a detailed description of reading behaviors and corresponding reading levels. First grade reading level expectations. The range of levels for first graders is rather large. Typically students enter first grade reading at a B level. We hope that they can progress to a level D by the December report card, an F or G by the March report card and an I by the June report card date. Of course we understand that all children make progress in their own way and time but these levels give us a goal to work toward. We also know how important it is for students to make progress in reading early in their academic career in order for them to be as successful as they can be in school in later years.
