Why
is there homework ?
*Homework provides your child with skills practice.
*Homework helps the child to develop responsibility for their own
learning.
*Homework in the primary grades helps to set the routine at home for
much needed study habits in future school years.
How much should I help my child with his/her
homework?
*Second graders are still very young children. They need
an adult to check over each assignment to be sure of quality work
that shows your child's best ability.
*It's fine to read the directions with your child if the child is
not sure what to do.
*All students are different. Go over and re-teach material if
needed. Repeated learning experiences are provided in the classroom
however, our team effort can only help your child to be successful.
If the child has mastered that task give as much independence as
possible.
*The family should not do the assignment for the student. Modeling
sentences for the spelling is a great strategy. Allow your child to
take more initiative as each assignment is given throughout the
year.
About how long should homework take each
night?
*No more than 30 minutes should be used for nightly homework
assignments. Children need to play and relax at night, too. If more
time seems to be needed every night, contact Mrs. Brem. Daily
reading is in addition to paper assignments.
What does the child need to do homework?
*A routine time and place with out distraction.
*School supplies easily available such as sharpened pencils, glue
stick, ruler, crayons.
*The handouts from school in their Orange Take Home Folder which has
the homework assignment written on the Homework Planner.
A-5 News
* Adults at home
need to read the newsletter. The A-5 News tells all about what is
happening in the classroom each week. Special events and projects
are announced. Achievements and things we are working on are
described in the news. Generally, the newsletter is sent home each
week.
Homework
Planning Sheet
*Students write
assignments on their sheet everyday of the week.
*Parents need to sign the sheet each night.
*A comment section is given for communications with Mrs. Brem.
Orange Take Home Folder
*The Mohonasen Folder is used for homework papers and
notes from school to go home, and return to school the next day. If
the Mohonasen folder is lost, please replace the folder with another
pocket folder to keep papers organized between home and school.
Assignments
* Homework is given
Monday-Thursday
*Spelling tests are usually
every Friday. (Changes in plan are announced.)
*Homework papers should take
about 20 minutes altogether.
*Generally one math and one E.L.A. assignment is given.
*Students need to read 20 minutes everyday independently or with
another reader.
*Review 10 addition math facts each night until all math facts are
automatically recalled.
*Occasionally a long term project is given requiring family
participation.
Enrichment
*Related Web Sites provide
numerous learning activities and research topics that supplement the
curriculum.
* Playing board games or card games with adults at home supports
academic and social skills development.
*Take time to read to your strong reader at home and talk about the
book as it relates to other books or personal experiences.
*Visit the public library to check out books about favorite science
topics, poetry, or magazines for children.
*Subscribe to a magazine like Zoobooks, Highlights,or Jack
and Jill for another kind of reading. |
