The anthology program provides a resource for a common experience in
the classroom for skill introduction and reinforcement.
Independent Reading
Students are encouraged, and time is provided for
students to read self-selected
and teacher provided texts related to science, math, social studies
each day.
Shared Reading
Big books, charts, overhead transparency texts, and
books are read out loud while the teacher models how readers think
about their reading.

We practice expressive, connected
oral reading to support comprehension.
Reader's
Theater-
Students read out loud the parts
of a play.
Choral Reading
Students read out loud
poetry, class letters, short stories, and articles.
Paired
Reading
Students alternate reading
out loud with a partner.
Rereading
Parts of our reading is
read out loud to support opinions and responses to literature.
Super
Readers
Each student has the
opportunity to prepare to read out loud a book at their
instructional level to read out loud to a small group of peers. This
student leads a conversation about the book shared with group

We play and work with words.
Project
Read
*Students participate in a
sequential phonemic awareness development program.
*White boards, magic slates, felt paper, sky writing, and memory
boxes are the tools we use.

Spelling
Lists
Words from Project Read
lessons are given weekly for students to work with study skills at
home with
3 Times each, ABC order, sentences, Look and Cover, and sometimes a
fun Word Search.
Making
Words
From Patricia Cunningham's
books, students build words by arranging letters to make into
2,3,4,5,6 letter words using clues provided by the teacher. |

Writing
We write every day for
many different purposes.
*Students write sentences, stories, essays, poetry, friendly
letters, thank you notes, lists, paragraphs, and research reports.
*Select pieces of writing
are proofread, edited and revised to publish for sharing with peers.
Printing Pals Club
As needed, small groups of students meet
throughout the year to review letter formation. |
