Students construct kiosk at Mabee Farm
June 22, 2011
Students in the Alternative Education Program at Draper have just completed their spring project at the Historic Mabee Farm.
Students were in charge of designing and building a kiosk to put next to the Mabee Farm's new Education Center. The kiosk will be used for displaying a map of the farm and possibly be a place for visitors to check in.
Students measured boards for cuts at proper angles, built a frame for the roof, learned how to properly make a cedar shake- style roof used during American Colonial times, and mix and set concrete to hold the structure up.
“The variety of hands-on activities necessary to its construction gave all students a task to complete,” said teacher Bill VanWie. “Teamwork was key to accomplishing their goal.”
A plaque with student names was mounted on the structure as a dedication to their hard work and contribution to a local place of history.
