Note to Parents:

As mentioned on the homepage, the 7th Grade Social Studies Curriculum focuses on the history of the United States from the discovery of the "New World" to the American Civil War (1861-1865)

The geography, history, diverse cultures, and exciting events that make up America will be will be studied in detail.  In order for the students to put a place with a name, maps will be used extensively. 

To help the student in your family succeed, encourage discussion about the units we are covering in school.  Don't be intimidated by their knowledge, when given the chance students love to share what they have learned!

Current events will also be discussed throughout the school year.  Encourage the reading of the newspaper and news magazines as well as watching the nightly news.  Engage in discussions of the events covered in these media.  Seventh graders love to engage in adult conversation of this type.  Current events discussion provides an excellent "link" from the past to the future.

Mr. Hays is in his eighth year at Draper Middle School.  Prior to teaching, his previous employment was with the federal government as a Management Analyst for 10 years.  Other jobs included driving a taxi, driving a delivery truck, security guard, salesman, even working on a ranch in New Mexico!  While attending college part-time as a 30-year-old student, he was bitten by the "teaching bug" and decided to pursue a degree in education.  Mr. Hays has an Associate's Degree in Business Administration from Adirondack Community College, a Bachelor's Degree in History from SUNY Albany, and a Master's Degree in Education from SUNY Albany.  In his spare time he likes to camp, hike, canoe, and ski with his family.  Mr. Hays is also a Sergeant in the New York Army National Guard.
