Course Description:· Social Studies 8 is the second part of a two-year survey course in American History. · 7th grade covers the time period from exploration to the beginning of the Civil War (1860). · 8th grade Social Studies begins with the Civil War and ends with the Vietnam War.
· Unit 1 – Civil War and Reconstruction (1846-1896) · Unit 2 – Westward Expansion, Rise of Industry, Inventions (1858-1914) · Unit 3 – Reform, Expansion, WW I (1865-1920) · Unit 4 – Jazz Age, Depression, WW II (1919-1945) · Unit 5 – Cold War Era, Civil Rights, Vietnam (1945-1975)
· Chapter Packet · Pencils, Pens, Colored Pencils, Highlighter · Leave Your Textbook at Home! I’ll Tell You When to Bring it to Class
· Good Attendance. · Bring all of your materials to class. · Participate in class activities – Teachers Value Your Input! · Stay up to date with your assignments. · Find a quiet area in your home to study and create a study routine. · Use the time in the Advisory Period wisely.
· Tests, Quizzes & Projects 75% · Homework 25% · Total 100%
· If you lose a Packet, let me know immediately. You are responsible for making up all of the assignments. · Packet assignments are given as homework and as class activities. · Be prepared to have your Chapter packets collected and graded. · I randomly choose 5 pages for each Chapter’s packet and grade them. This counts as your Packet grade. · NOTES pages are included at the back of each packet to help you stay organized.
· Homework assignments are posted on the Homework Board and should be copied down in your Agenda when they are assigned. · Homework may also be checked at your seat for completeness and effort. · Periodically, I will give “open homework” quizzes. You may use your homework to answer the questions.
· Journal entries are student’s responses to thought provoking questions. · Questions relate to subject material, classroom activities and current events. · Questions will ask students for their opinion, NOT a specific right or wrong answer. · Entries are graded on how well a student supports his/her opinion. · Responses are written on the JOURNAL page of your Chapter packet.
· In June, all 8th Graders in New York State will take the NYS Grade 8 Intermediate Test in Social Studies. This exam will count as your Final Exam grade (the Final Exam is worth 20% of your Total Grade for the class). · A Midterm Exam will be given at the end of January. It will be in the same format as the NYS Exam given in June.
