Mineral Comparison Project
Mr. Lundy (Earth Science)

Choose TWO minerals: one can be a birthstone or gemstone, the other must be chosen from the list of minerals in your Earth Science Reference Tables. Research both minerals using your reference tables, rock and mineral field guides, or internet resources. Create a Power Point Presentation, poster, brochure, or two page typed report comparing the two minerals. Below are some suggestions on the type of information you should be searching for.

  1. How are the minerals used today and/or how have they been used in the past.
  2. Where on Earth and in what kind of rocks are they found.
  3. What do the minerals have in common (uses, chemical composition, physical properties, where they are found).
  4. How the minerals are different (uses, chemical composition, physical properties, where they are found).

You MUST include at least 6 facts on each of your minerals. These facts must include the physical and chemical properties and uses of your minerals and may include their values, historical importance, occurrence, rarity etc. Your project must be in one of the following forms: Power Point presentation, poster, brochure, or two page typed report. Your project must include at least TWO references (including your Earth Science Reference Tables).

Some of the information is in your Earth Science Reference Tables or can be found in mineral identification books in class or at the library.  Below is a list of websites to help you gather information. Remember to correctly list all of your references in your project.

Your project will be graded using the following rubric:

  1. At least 6 facts on each mineral.  You must include the mineral’s physical and chemical properties (including hardness, chemical composition, color, luster, and density, or specific gravity) and uses. (60pts).
  2. In your own words (10pts)
  3. Accurate information with references  (20pts)
  4. Creativity (10pts)

Good Luck and have fun with the assignment!
