A Treasure Hunt
The Great Wall of China

Social Studies - Grade 6 - Mr. Coco, Mr. DiCocco and Mrs. Zyskowski

This is your chance to find out about one of the greatest feats that mankind has ever undertaken. The Great Wall of China is NOT one of the Seven Wonders of the World.  The reason may have been because the Greeks (who proposed the list of Wonders) were not aware of the existence of the wall in the 5th century (see the Discovery Channel site). Once you have answered the following questions, be sure to read and answer the Big Question at the end.

Read the question and then click on the site listed below it to find the answer.  During your search you will discover that some of the sites have conflicting information. For that reason, be sure you answer the question from the page provided for that question.

10. Did the wall serve its purpose (to protect China)?  Explain

Now that you have found the answers to these questions, you have probably learned a lot more about The Great Wall of China.  So here is the Big Question:

Why do many people consider this structure one of the great wonders of the world?

(you may use some facts from above, or you may include some of the other facts you  found while you were reading, but be careful about thinking that the wall may be seen from the moon.  That is not correct information.)
The two sites below are fun to look at as they have lots of pictures and short captions:
